Buying advice#

  1. See the parents, how they behave with strangers and their screening results (hips, elbows, DM/JLPP DNA). Insist on documents, not promises.
  2. Ask for CKU registration (verifiable on cku.org.cn) or registration with the British registry, and a 3-generation pedigree: the Western gene pool is very small (a COI of 13 % has been observed).
  3. Choose a puppy raised and socialised in a family home, not in an isolated kennel, and not delivered by a courier without a prior visit.
  4. Be wary of cheap "Chinese Red Dog" ads (German Shepherd / Rottweiler crosses) and of "export" middlemen promising an "FCI pedigree" that does not exist.
  5. Do not rely on looks. In China, buyers have suspected that a puppy sold as a Dobermann was a Laizhou Hong (two cases, in 2020 and 2022, in which the breed was never established: see The Laizhou Hong and the law in China). Conversely, in Europe, a black and tan dog with erect ears is not necessarily a Laizhou Hong. Ask for proof of origin and the parents' health results.
  6. A breed DNA test can help. The Wisdom Panel laboratory includes the Laizhou Hong in its breed database: its test can show whether a dog is, at least in part, a Laizhou Hong. The result is only indicative.
  7. Read the contract, which varies widely from one kennel to another. At Alysium Red Dogs (United States): compulsory neutering between 18 and 24 months, no breeding, $5,000 owed for each puppy born to a female sold, first right of return (the dog must never go to a shelter), 2-year guarantee against severe dysplasia, juvenile epilepsy, some heart murmurs and degenerative myelopathy. At Laizhou Hong Brasil: puppies handed over already neutered ("hormone-sparing" method, not specified), 30 days of follow-up, buy-back right.
  8. Plan your budget: a 50 kg dog, large-breed food, insurance, dog sports.
  9. In France, the sale must state that the dog is not registered with the LOF (French stud book). Insist on identification, a veterinary certificate and a sales contract.
  10. Consider adoption. In the United Kingdom, Chinese Red Dog Aid UK rehomes adult dogs after an application, an interview and a home visit. In France, no dedicated organisation is known.
